Alix Smith
New York-based artist Alix Smith, who recently graduated with an MFA in Photography and Related Media from New York's SVA, explores in her series "Arranged Appearances" how people perceive their own identity and how the latter is projected. For the creation of what she calls her tableaux vivants, Smith invited acquaintances to assemble their favorite objects and processions - books, magazines, shoes, pearl necklaces. Ambivalence prevails in the 27-year-old's photographs as she |
explores the intentions of her subjects as well as how they are perceived by others. Hailed as the next Tina Barney, Smith has already exhibited in New York galleries such as Caelum, (renowned photography collector Jean Pigozzi bought her entire show) Robert Miller, Jeanne Tengelsen, and, last summer at the Visual Arts Gallery. Look out for a new body of work which will be on display next year at 404 Arte Contemporanea Gallery in Naples. www.alixsmith.com |
